Fatmata J. Williams, MPH, was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during the civil war (1991–2002), which enveloped the country, and left over 50,000 dead and 2.6 million citizens displaced. The war was characterized by widespread atrocities, including the abduction of children and systematic rape. At the age of 4, Fatmata was fortunate to find refuge abroad in the United States, to be raised by her aunt in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Ms. Williams, began school a few months after arriving and was excited about the new opportunity of education. She went on to graduating from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in 2010, then further pursued higher education. With 80.0 percent of the female population in Sierra Leone, being illiterate, this accomplishment was not only seen as an honor but a privilege that most of her peers, back home, only dreamed of.

In 2014, Fatmata, obtained her Bachelor of Science, in Natural Resources and Agriculture, with a concentration in Biology, from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. She then completed her Master of Science in Administration, in Public and Community Healthcare Management from Trinity Washington University in 2017, where her passion for health advocacy and humanitarianism was revealed to her.

During all those years, she faced many hardships; as an immigrant woman, first generation college graduate, leader and now a mother. The education she received in school wasn’t even compared, to life’s lessons and setbacks. However, she considered herself blessed to have role models that contributed to her growth, had similar aspirations and provided her with guidance she needed to achieve her goals.

I was fortunate to have, inspirational people throughout my life, who not only believed in me, but pushed and motivated me to reach my full potential, before I could fully visualize the woman I was created to be.
— Fatmata J. Williams, MPH, Founder/CEO of OPG Foundations
